Fatal Residential Fire

This morning at around 03:50 am, Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office along with Pioneer Fire and Cal Fire personnel responded to a structure fire in the 7000 block of Mt. Aukum Road, Somerset. At the time of the incident, it was reported that the residence was occupied by multiple people. Fire personnel were able to extinguish the structure fire, however two individuals were found deceased inside the structure. Currently the cause of the fire is under investigation. The identities of the victims will be released by the Sheriff’s Office once identification is confirmed and next of kin notification has been made. No further information will be released at this time. When further information becomes available, the post will be updated.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Division has positively identified the victims from the tragic residential house fire on January 1st, 2025. The victims are a 15 year old male and a 14 year old female, both of El Dorado County. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased El Dorado County Jail inmate as Brandon Canfield, 50 years old, of South Lake Tahoe. This identification is related to the Critical Incident on November 29, 2024. At this time the incident is an active investigation, and no further information will be provided at this time.

On November 29, 2024, at about 5:30am an inmate in the El Dorado County Jail, South Lake Tahoe, 1051 Al Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA was located unresponsive in his cell. Correctional Officers, jail nursing staff, and El Dorado County Fire personnel attempted life saving measures however the inmate was pronounced deceased a short time later. The identity of the inmate will be provided by the Sheriff’s Office after next of kin has been notified. Due to the critical nature of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office initiated a critical incident protocol as part of the investigation. The El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and the Placerville Police Department are assisting with the investigation. At this time the incident is an active investigation, and no further information will be provided at this time.
