Caretaker Fraud Investigation

On July 30, 2018, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office was called regarding a fraud investigation in Rescue.  The caller had found multiple fraudulent checks made out to a caretaker they had hired for their elderly parent. EDSO deputies and detectives worked together and found that the caretaker, identified as Terry Whitcomb, had written numerous fraudulent checks for thousands of dollars. Whitcomb was interviewed and subsequently arrested.  A search was conducted at Whitcomb’s residence and over $5,000 was recovered.

Whitcomb was booked into the El Dorado County Jail for charges of identity theft and Elder abuse.

Alcoholic Beverage Control Grant Operation

On Friday, August 3, 2018, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and ABC Agents, in accordance with a grant from the state of California Alcoholic Beverage Control, conducted a minor decoy and shoulder tap operation. The purpose of the operation was to deter people from buying alcoholic beverages for minors and underage patrons and to catch those committing the crime.

During the course of the county wide operation, two people were issued citations for purchasing alcohol for minors.  The minors also attempted to purchase alcohol from multiple stores, all of which denied sales to them.

Home Invasion in Cool, Ca

Monday night, August 6, 2018, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a home invasion in the area of Indian Rock Road in Cool, Ca. The original caller said an unknown man had entered their residence and began damaging the inside. The caller was able to safely escape with his wife and young child to a neighbor’s residence.

Minutes later, there was a second 911 call from a neighboring residence reporting the same intruder had broken into their locked screened porch. The intruder then shattered a glass door to the home and attempted entry as he was being ordered by the homeowner to leave. The homeowner, fearing for the safety of his family, fired multiple rounds at the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive.

This is an ongoing investigation and no arrest has been made yet. We are withholding the name of the suspect pending completion of the investigation.
